Tony HONG (TV Personality & Actor)

Hong Seok-cheon was the first celebrity in South Korea to publicly come out as gay. Since revealing his identity on September 26, 2000, he has played a significant role in advancing public awareness and understanding of LGBTQ+ rights in Korean society. His coming out is widely regarded as a historic moment that brought LGBTQ+ visibility into the mainstream cultural landscape.

Hong first gained widespread popularity through the sitcom Three Guys and Three Girls, where he played the designer character “Ppusong.” Following his public coming out, however, he faced discrimination and prejudice that significantly limited his broadcasting activities. Despite these challenges, he continued his career without concealing his identity and remained an outspoken advocate as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Since the 2010s, Hong has reconnected with the public through a variety of entertainment and current affairs programs, establishing himself as the most widely recognized openly LGBTQ+ public figure in South Korea. More recently, through his YouTube channel Hong Seok-cheon’s Jewel Box, he has introduced emerging male actors while helping to create a safer and more supportive environment for LGBTQ+ people and other minorities pursuing careers in the entertainment industry.
